Powerless by Lauren Roberts Book Summary
Powerless by Lauren Roberts This book is the most requested one; many people suggested it to me and asked for its summary. So yes, here it is. First, let’s know the story, and then we’ll talk about the book.
The main female character of this book is named Paddy Ann Grey. She lives in a slum and steals food to keep herself and her best friend alive. That’s how she survives. Both her parents are dead. She used to rob people and steal food too — she was a total bandit-type.
The male main character of this book is Kai Azar. He is a prince and was going to become the royal future enforcer. Though he is a prince, his upbringing was different because he was trained to become the royal enforcer. He was taught a lot of fighting and different types of torture. Kai had to endure all that torture — he was also tortured — and he grew up very roughly. He was made a monster, as they say: a monster is not born, he is made. So they made Kai a monster.
On the other hand, Kai has a brother named Kit who is going to become the future king. His upbringing was totally different from Kai’s because he was being trained for royalty — books, how to talk, what to do, where to go — all the royal etiquette. Kit used to feel very bad for his brother because his brother had to go out and fight, while he just sat there reading. He felt guilty about it. But there was never any fight between the brothers. They loved each other a lot and lived together.
Then one day, without knowing who he was, Pedan robs Kai. Kai had gone to the slum where Pedan lived, and she robbed him — took all his money and whatever he had. Some people there were about to kill Kai, but Pedan saves him. From then on, Kai gets impressed with her.
There were two types of people in the kingdom: royals and ordinary people. The ordinaries had certain abilities but no special powers. Among the people with powers, some could disappear (vanishers), some were psychic (able to read minds), some were healers, and so on. Those who had abilities believed that ordinary people were dangerous and should be killed, even though ordinary people didn’t actually have any powers.
Anyway, a trial was announced — the Perching Trial. In this event, those with abilities would showcase their powers. Pedan also gets selected and is taken to the royal compound, where all the contestants were going to stay — including Kai. After going there, Pedan and Kai’s relationship is very different. They are enemies. They didn’t like each other at all. But they start getting attracted to one another — a lot. They hate the fact that they like each other. Confusing, right? But still, they flirted a lot. They were very flirtatious.
Then, another twist comes into the story — a love triangle. A love triangle happens between Pedan and Kit. Actually, Pedan was selected for the trial because she lied to everyone. She claimed she had a special power — that she was psychic and could read minds — otherwise, they would’ve killed her. That’s why she acted that way, and she continues pretending during the trial.
This year, the competition was going to be much tougher than in previous years. Many new and dangerous challenges were added. As the trial progresses, it becomes clear that this is all being done just to test Kai — his abilities, power, and strength.
Anyway, this book is very good. Overall, it’s really very good. It’s a cute romance. This is the author's debut novel. Yes, the book starts off a little slow. The first 50–60 pages are hard to understand, very confusing, and honestly very boring. But once you get past that, it gets better.
There are a lot of tropes in this book: a love triangle, enemies to lovers, “who did this to you?” moments, and morally grey characters. Although Kai didn’t feel like a morally grey person to me, the story still works. Kai and Pedan flirt in every line — literally every single line — so that’s fun to read. They are very flirtatious.
What I loved the most is the character of Pedan. I love strong female leads — the ones who are dominating, independent, full of strength. Pedan is exactly that. She doesn’t give up. She gets tortured, she fights, but never quits. That’s what I loved about her in this book.
Also, there’s competition in the book, but the romantic flirting overshadows it a bit. The competition part felt slightly blurred and not very focused. Still, this book is really very good. I loved it and enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it.
