Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber — Book Summary

Evangeline believed in true love’s happy ever after, and she also wanted a happy ever after in her life. Evangeline loved someone whose name was Luke. Evangeline's mother died in her childhood, and then her father married another woman.

Her stepmother did not like her, and Evangeline also had a stepsister with whom she did not get along. One day, Evangeline comes to know that her stepsister is going to get married to Luke. She is shocked and desperate to stop the wedding.

Evangeline's father used to tell her fairy tales and stories about Fates, and she knew they helped people. So she goes to a Fate named Jacks, known as the Prince of Broken Hearts. Jack says if there is true love, he can fix it. He agrees to help Evangeline, but on one condition—she must kiss three people chosen by him. Evangeline agrees to stop the marriage.

Jack leaves, and Evangeline goes to the wedding hall, where she sees everyone turned into stone statues. She realises it’s a conspiracy and part of Jack's doing. A solution is kept there to bring everyone back to normal, but in return, Evangeline must become a statue. Without thinking, she drinks it and becomes a stone statue. After six weeks, she becomes normal again, helped by Fate.

When she returns to the city, Evangeline becomes a saviour while her stepsister becomes a cursed bride, and everyone starts hating her. Evangeline receives an invitation to attend a ball in another country. Feeling guilty, she takes her stepsister with her. At the ball, she meets Jacks again and another prince named Apollo. Jacks tells her she must kiss Apollo or she will die. To save herself, she kisses him, and then Jack performs magic that makes Apollo obsessed with Evangeline. He proposes to her and wants to marry her.

Evangeline feels happy at first, thinking this could be her happy ever after, but she later realises it’s unrealistic. She asks Jacks to undo the magic. Jack tells her it’s not possible now, as removing the magic would break Apollo's heart forever. On the wedding night, Evangeline again requests JJack to undo the magic. He agrees but says she must kiss Apollo again. She does, and Apollo begins to feel unwell and dies. Evangeline thinks her kiss killed him. Guards arrive and arrest her, but JaJackomes rescues her.

Evangeline starts crying uncontrollably, and Jackrealises somethingg is wrong. He takes her to Lala for treatment, and she is told someone poisoned her. Jack then tells her there was no magic in Apollo's kiss, and he was just teasing her. JJack says if he wanted to kill her, he would have done so earlier. They start suspecting Evangeline’s stepsister, Marisol, who had a magical book. Evangeline and Jack partner up to find Apollo's murderer.

They meet a vampire who tells them the serum used to affect Apollo was stolen by someone clever—likely Marisol. At the vampire’s house, Evangeline sees many people locked in cages, including Luke. She wants to release him despitewarningss. When she does, Luke attacks her. Jack protects her and gets attacked, turning into a vampire. Evangeline takes Jacks to his house as they are now declared Apollo’s murderers.

At Jack's house, Evangeline finds a book with a truth serum recipe. She prepares it and goes alone to the palace since Jack is unwell. She confronts her stepsister and accuses her. Marisol admits to the things she did with Luke but denies any involvement in Apollo's death. Evangeline also confesses her guilt about turning Marisol into the cursed bride.

Marisol gets angry and calls the guards. Apollo’s brother, who was engaged to Marisol, accidentally drinks the truth serum and confesses to poisoning and killing Apollo. The guards arrest him, and Evangeline and Jack are cleared of all charges. Two servants inform them that Apollo is not dead but in a suspended state.

Evangeline is shocked, happy, and also confused because she has started feeling attracted to The story ends here, and more will be revealed in the next book about whether Apollo gets cured and what happens between Evangeline and Jacks.

With this series, Amish shifts from mythological fiction to historical fiction , aiming to bring alive the forgotten heroes of India’s past—warriors who fought against invaders and preserved Indian culture.
