Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi Summary
Shatter me by Tahereh Mafi Summary 17-year-old girl Juliette is in an asylum for 264 days because she has a superpower — whoever she touches dies. Because of this, her parents also stayed away from her. They did not love her much. She did not have any friends. She used to go to school, sit alone, and the boys used to throw stones at her while the girls used to beat her.
No one could even go near her. Juliette was actually a very hurt girl. One day she tried to save a small child in a grocery shop, but the child couldn’t be saved. After that, the people around suggested to her parents to send her to jail. Instead of helping her, her parents did exactly that.
From the age of 14 to 17, that is for 3 years, she was kept either in jail or an asylum. In the asylum, she was not given proper food. She had only 5 minutes to bathe. There was no permission to meet each other. Nobody even saw anyone else’s face. Actually, no one was allowed to come in contact with anyone. But suddenly one day, a boy was sent to her cell. Juliette got very scared, which was natural. She felt that he had been sent there to harm her. But the boy tried to talk to her. Juliette didn’t want to talk, but he helped her a lot. Juliette found the boy's eyes very familiar.
Then Juliette remembered that he was in school with her, in her class. But Juliette thought maybe that boy had forgotten her, so she didn’t say anything. The boy asked her name, and Juliette told him her name. In return, the boy told her his name — Adam Kent. Juliette told him that she wanted to run away from there. Adam told her that he would help her, and that both of them would run away from there. Juliette got excited but didn’t say anything.
After a few days, Adam took her to a place with Aslam. Juliette thought she would be taken to jail and tortured or even killed. But the opposite happened. She was given a room with cameras watching her every move. She wondered what had happened to Adam. Then she learned that Adam worked for Warner. Adam personally went to Juliette and told her everything — it was all a plan. Warner already knew about her powers and had sent Adam to bring her.
Later, Juliette was brought before Warner and realized he was also a 19-year-old boy — merciless in nature. If anyone stood against him, he would kill them. Warner told Juliette to join his team. But Juliette told him she didn’t want to do such things. She wanted a normal life. Warner told her she would never get a normal life because no one would accept her with her powers. But Adam was different. He told Juliette to stay the way she is. He said she was kind-hearted and supported her.
Juliette admitted that she had liked Adam for a long time but didn’t feel she deserved him. Finally, someone was loving her and supporting her. She started loving Adam too. They planned to run away. According to their plan, they tried to escape. But Warner caught them. He tried to stop them and told Juliette repeatedly that no one would accept her. But Juliette went with Adam anyway.
A strange thing was that both Adam and Warner could touch Juliette, and nothing happened to them. Seeing this, Juliette became soft. They escaped. Adam took Juliette to his home, where his brother James lived alone. That area was for orphan children, and there was a school too. Adam and Juliette started living there. James was shocked to see Juliette. Adam explained everything to him and told him she couldn’t be touched. Juliette liked James a lot.
The next morning, someone knocked loudly at the door. It was a man named Kenji, who used to work for Warner but had run away. At first, Adam didn’t believe him or let him enter. But when he saw Kenji’s ID, they let him in. Kenji told them he could take them to a safe place. At first, they didn’t believe him. But when Warner’s men came looking for them, they had no choice but to run.
While running, Adam was caught and badly beaten. He was hidden in the forest. Warner and his men caught Juliette, but she didn’t give up. She took the gun and shot Warner. Then she ran, found Adam, and with Kenji and James, they reached the safe place Kenji had mentioned.
There, Adam and Juliette were treated for their injuries. Juliette discovered that many others like her existed. She was shocked. Kenji also had similar powers. The head of the place was named Castle. He explained everything — they work for the welfare of people. Juliette also wanted to do something good. She was given a special suit, and after wearing it, she could touch others without harming them. She was very happy. This is where the book ends.
Now, how was this book? I didn’t like it that much. At first, I couldn’t understand what was happening. When I started to understand, the book ended. While reading this book, I was reminded of two things — one was Elsa from Frozen, who also had similar powers, and the other was a movie named Ek Maa (maybe I don’t remember the name properly), which had people with different types of powers.
Overall, after reading this book, I understood that it’s part of a series. To be honest, I didn’t like it that much because the story really begins at the end. There are more parts to this series — three in total. I haven’t read the other two parts yet, so I can’t say how the entire series is. And yes, this book is only from Juliette’s point of view. One thing I liked a lot was the short chapters. I actually like short chapters because I don’t like long ones. That’s one thing I liked about this book.
