The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins Summary
The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins — this book teaches us how we can make our life easy and happy just by keeping the expectations of others aside.
So this book by Mel Robbins, The Let Them Theory, has been written by understanding our everyday life struggles. There is always a thought in our mind — what will people think? or I have to live up to their expectations. Friend, this thought comes in our mind so many times that we kill our real dreams and ambitions. But Mel Robbins says that if we let others think what they expect from us, then we can never live our life according to our wishes.
The principle of the Let Them Theory is to ignore the opinion of others while taking decisions in life. It means to let them think and focus on your goals and desires.
Phase One: Struggling with Expectations
Let me tell you a story. This story is of a boy named Ravi. Ravi was a boy from a normal middle-class family. He was from a very simple home but there was one special thing in him — he always wanted to do something big. He had big dreams in his eyes, but whenever he tried to do something, only one question came to his mind every time — What would happen if I did this and people started judging me? What if people see me failing? If my parents or friends felt bad?
This question echoed in Ravi's mind every time. He was afraid of what would happen if whatever he did, he could not succeed in it and people made fun of him. Thinking this, Ravi always put his dreams on one side. He thought let's do it someday later, but this "someday later" never came. His life seemed to have stopped.
Ravi's dream was that he wanted to become a successful entrepreneur — he wanted to have his own business, his own company. But every time he started working on his business ideas, a thought would come to his mind which would stop him: What will people think if I fail? This thought had dominated him so much that he was afraid to take any step forward.
Every time he thought of doing something new, this fear would haunt him: Will people call me crazy? If this idea goes wrong, people will cut me off? And then the same thing would happen — Ravi would run away from that fear and leave his dreams incomplete.
This fear kept pulling him back. Although Ravi's heart knew that he was no less than anyone. He knew that if he gave up, he would never be able to fulfill his real dream. But still, that fear had gripped him.
Many times he used to think that if people have expectations from me and I am not able to meet them... Then one day Ravi understood that if he allowed himself to live according to his desires, then he would never get a chance to move forward. But by that time this fear and these questions had settled so deep in Ravi's mind that he was ready to give up his dream.
He thought — Will I ever be able to walk on that path? Immersed in this thought, Ravi gave up his dream. But after that day another thing also happened — those judgments and chains of fear could not make him stronger. Then Ravi adopted The Let Them Theory, and he got out of this mentality.
This is the story of Ravi, who was bound by the thinking and fear of others, but only by changing this thinking, he achieved his real success.
Phase Two: The Breakthrough
One day Ravi read The Let Them Theory and his mind opened up. As soon as he read this book, a new world opened up. He understood that if he devoted his entire life to his dream, then whatever happens, he can live his life according to his own will.
It was said in Mel Robbins' book that instead of living our life according to others, we should take our own decisions without fearing anyone's opinion. Ravi understood that as long as he would pay attention to the thinking of others, he would never be able to fulfill his dreams.
When he understood this theory, he removed the fear from his mind about what people would say. Ravi decided that now he would not let the thinking of others become the decision maker of his life. Now he would focus on his goals and would not let anyone's expectations determine the direction of his life.
This was a very big step for him because till now he felt himself bound by the opinions of others. But Ravi understood that as long as he would keep thinking about the expectations of others, he would never be able to control his life.
So he decided to start his own business. The way in which Ravi overcame his fear and started his life — Ravi decided to live life on his own terms and became an inspiration. He understood that the fear of others and their thinking only reduces the strength within us. If we leave our fear and control our life ourselves, then we can definitely reach our destination.
Phase Three: The Change in Mindset
Ravi changed his mindset and implemented the Let Them Theory in his life. After that, many changes came in his life. Earlier, whenever he thought about any work, he used to overthink a lot. His mind used to get confused about every small thing.
But when he adopted this principle, his thinking changed. Now he did not overthink that much. He took himself out of the mindset that what will happen if it fails and now he started living his life in his own way.
He started expanding his business, worked on new projects, and tried his best to live his life according to his own wishes. Now he was not afraid of the opinion of others on his every decision. He knew that whatever he does will become his path.
Mel Robbins says that the thoughts in our mind determine our decisions. Our thoughts influence us. Our thoughts give us direction. If we keep our mind positive and focused, we can easily achieve our goals.
The same thing happened with Ravi. As soon as he made his thinking positive and stopped giving others' expectations a chance to interfere in his life, success came in his life.
Ravi vowed to himself that now he would not change the direction of his life on the thoughts of others. As his thinking changed, new opportunities started coming to him. His business started growing, and the biggest thing was that now he had found a way to be happy.
He understood that as long as we pay attention to the opinions of others, we will lose our own happiness. But when we live our life in our own way, not only do we remain happy ourselves, but we are also able to achieve our real success.
Phase Four: Freedom in Letting Go
Another thing that Mel Robbins says is the concept of freedom. This is very important, and Ravi understood it in his life. When we do not allow others' thoughts and opinions to interfere in our life — when we give too much importance to others — we lose our freedom.
We start changing our thinking and our life decisions according to others, and this is the time when we lose our real happiness and our true freedom.
But Mel Robbins' Let Them Theory teaches us that when we give others the right to think, we free ourselves from their judgment. It means — even if someone judges us, we can ignore them and live our life our way.
This freedom makes our decision-making process better. When we remove the opinions of others from our mind, we can take the real decisions of our life ourselves. This is true freedom.
Ravi took this step. He explained to his family that now he will live his life his way. At first, his family members were a little confused because they had expectations from Ravi and they wanted him to move in the same direction as they thought.
But gradually, Ravi explained to them that if he starts living his life according to the expectations of others, then his life can never be happy. He understood that he has to fulfill his goals to keep himself happy, no matter what anyone thinks.
The family members were confused for a while, but when they saw that Ravi is happy and confident in his life, they started supporting him and understood that if Ravi himself pursues his goals, then his life can be much better for him.
Now Ravi had that freedom in his life. Whatever he wanted, he was moving towards his dreams without caring about anyone, and his family also supported him fully.
So friends, this was the summary of The Let Them Theory in which we saw how we can free our lives from the thoughts and expectations of others. This theory taught us that if we free our minds from the judgments of others and keep our thinking positive, then we can live our lives on our own terms.
When we take our own decisions, we get the real way to achieve our goals.
If you also adopt the Let Them Theory in your life, then you will get new opportunities and growth in your life. It will give you the power to follow yourself and your dreams.
